Overview
The temple is located in Koviladi, in Thiruchirappalli, and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and also one of the 108 Divya Desam Temples.
About the Temple
The temple said to be mostly contributed by Chola dynasties. Mythology says that the as a result of sin, King Ubhamanya was cursed by Saint Durvasar and lost all his power. To get rid of his sin, the king was asked to go to Thirupper Nagar and to feed one lakh people there every day.As asked by the saint, the king started feeding one lakh people at Thirupper Nagar every day. And one day, as a result of testing the king, Lord Vishnu appeared as an old man and asked the king for the meal. The king started feeding to the old man. The old man consumed all the food which was prepared for one lakh people for a day. The king got confused by seeing this but kept calm and asked the old man with respect whether he need anything else. And the old man asked for a pot full of Nei Appam (a kind of sweet).The king arranged for it and gave it to the old man. And as soon as the old man received the Appam, the king got relieved of his curse and got blessings from Lord Vishnu in His original form. Because of this reason, the Lord Vishnu is well known as Appakkudathaan in this temple and even today Appam is offered as a special offering to the presiding deity here.
About the Deity
Lord Vishnu is worshipped here by the name Appala Rangan, the presiding deity of this temple in reclining posture facing the west direction. This Perumal temple constitutes of 3-tiered Rajagopuram, and the Moolavar (Appala Rangan) is seen holding a pot in His right hand, and surrounded by Goddess Bhooma Deviand Goddess Kamala Valli Thaayar. The other deities of this temple are Lord Ganesha, Saint Nammazhwar, Ramanujar, Lord Lakshmi Narayanar and Lord Venugopalan. Sri Appakkudathaan Perumal Temple is said to be one of the Panacharanga Kshetrams(five temples) situated on the banks of river Cauvery, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Legend and Stories
King Upamanyu lost his powers due to the curse of Sage Durvasa. When begged for pardon and relief, the sage said that the king should feed one lakh people in this place, then known as Palasavanam and he would be relieved of the curse. The king built a palace nearby and commenced the feeding. One day, Lord Sriman Narayanan-Perumal came there in the guise of an aged Brahmin. He was served food. To test the determination of the king, Lord consumed the entire quantity of food prepared for the day. King politely asked the Brahmin if He wanted anything more. The Brahmin replied He wanted one pot of Appam. Sooner He received Appam pot from the king, his curse vanished, says the Sthala Purana
